Every Friday evening, Craigie-Lee Paterson volunteers her time at the Perth Eagles Wheelchair Sports Club. There, she sets up equipment to make sure everything is ready for participants, coaches, captures photos of the action, and shares the club’s achievements on social media.
Ensuring the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of everyone involved is all part of the commitment Craigie-Lee brings to her role. Her dedication doesn’t end there. As a member of the club committee, she plays a key part in planning and decision-making, helping the club continue to grow, develop, and offer meaningful opportunities for people with disabilities to get active in sport.
When asked what keeps her coming back every week, Craigie-Lee doesn’t hesitate:
“Having seen the power of sport in increasing the confidence of those with a disability, I want to make sure there are local opportunities for all those who want it.”
That positive impact is clear within the inclusive culture in the club. Members have grown in confidence as they try new skills, build independence, and push themselves in ways they never thought possible. Friendships formed during sessions have extended far beyond the sports hall, with members meeting up socially and supporting each other outside the club. Several participants have even stepped into leadership roles, returning as volunteer coaches - proof of how empowering wheelchair sport can be when people are given a chance to shine.
Partnerships have also played an important role in widening opportunities.
Craigie-Lee explains, “Various Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport have been along to work with us to show how their sport can be adapted - from badminton, fencing , basketball, rugby, archery and many more”
“Perth & Kinross Disability Sport have been key in signposting new people to our club and well as supporting our No Cost Participation approach”
These visits open up new possibilities, allowing participants to explore different sports in accessible and exciting ways.
Graeme Doig, Perth & Kinross Disability Sport added "Craigie-Lee has been instrumental in the success of the Eagles and has been there since day one. Her friendly, caring and supportive approach means she is very popular with all at the club and encourages everyone to be themselves and do their best."
Through her commitment, enthusiasm, and belief in the potential of every participant, Craigie-Lee is helping to build a community where people with disabilities not only take part in sport—but thrive through it. Her impact is seen in every smile, every new skill learned, and every friendship formed at the Perth Eagles Wheelchair Sports Club.
