Benefits of Sport

On the first day of Scottish Disability Sport Week 2025, we explore the benefits of taking part in sport and physical activity.

Taking part in sport and physical activity offers a wide range of physical, mental, emotional and social benefits for people with disabilities.

Physically, it helps improve strength, coordination, and overall health, promoting independence and an active lifestyle.

Mentally, participation can boost confidence, resilience, and self-esteem by providing a sense of achievement and purpose.

It also offers valuable opportunities for social interaction, helping individuals build friendships, teamwork skills, and a sense of belonging within a supportive community.

Beyond personal benefits, disability sport challenges stereotypes, raises awareness about ability and inclusion, and demonstrates that everyone can enjoy and excel in physical activity regardless of ability.

We caught up with some local athletes to find out how taking part in sport has benefited them. Here is what they said:

“It helps you stay active and make new friends” – Matthew Doig, Frame Running – Perth Strathtay Harriers

“It’s really helped my confidence, making new friends as well as keeping fit” – Frazer Hutchison, Luncarty Bowling Club

“I’d say getting fitter, communicating with my friends and learning about a variety of sports” – Murrin Widley, Perth Eagles Wheelchair Sports and Boccia Club

“One of the many benefits I have experienced is being able to meet new people from different backgrounds and countries as well as travelling the world – which has been a bonus for me!” – Alex Medley, Perth Eagles Boccia Club / Scottish Boccia Squad

“As well as getting fitter and stronger trying new things I have met new people, went new places” – Charlie Mailer, Perth Eagles Wheelchair Sports / Scotland U18 Wheelchair Basketball player

“I think anyone with a disability should give sport a go, as it’s a great way of improving your health and wellbeing. You may find a sport you love that you never thought about trying” – Brogan Dodds, Perth Dolphins Disability Swim Club and British Down’s Syndrome Swimming Champion
