Event Information

Perth & Kinross Disability Sport is delighted to invite primary and secondary school pupils who have physical, learning or sensory disabilities or related additional support needs to take part in our Sportshall Athletics festival on Wednesday 26th January 2022 at the Academy of Sport & Wellbeing, Perth College UHI, Crieff Road, Perth, PH1 2NX in partnership with Perth Strathtay Harriers, Perth College UHI and Scottish Disability Sport.

Sportshall Athletics is an indoor programme of adapted athletics activities which is fully inclusive. Events include Speed-bounce, Javelin, Shuttle runs, Target throw, Hurdles, Standing Long Jump, Hi-stepper, Seated chest push and with additional relay runs at the end.

This is a fun, recreational festival to support and encourage pupils to get active and enjoy physical activity in a safe and friendly environment.

I have attached our COVID safety guidance for your information. Please note I have split the festival into two timeslots this year to reduce numbers in the hall at any one time and to double the space we will use for field events.
Primary School pupils are 10am-12pm
• Secondary School pupils are 12.45pm-2.45pm

As with all our events, there is no cost to participate. Pupils are required to bring any snacks they would like and plenty water with them.
Please complete and return the attached entry form to Graeme@pkds.org.uk as soon as possible and by no later than Wednesday 20th January 2022.

A special mention of thanks to the coaches at Perth Strathtay Harriers Athletics club and Sports Coaching & Development Students from Perth College UHI who have supported the preparation and delivery of this event.
The inclusion group at the Harriers meets every Tuesday at 6pm at the George Duncan Athletics Arena in Perth. Contact Jim Hunter – j_m_hunter@btinternet.com to get involved.

If you have any questions or would like me to come to your school to show you how to adapt each event for your pupils, please do not hesitate to get in touch – graeme@pkds.org.uk

School Information

Registration
Registration for the Primary School event is at 9.30am and 12.15pm for the Secondary School event – hopefully this gives you plenty time to travel to Perth College. Please try to be at the venue as early as possible so that you can receive your registration pack, settle in, use the toilets etc.

There will be a registration table just inside the sports hall – please let us know you have arrived and advise us of any withdrawals. Each school will receive an envelope with a copy of the running order for the day and coloured wrist bands which will indicate the group colour for your pupils.

You are then free to find an area in the large bleacher seating area where your school can have space for time out, snacks etc. There are toilets, including accessible toilets with a hoist, which run the whole length of the corridor parallel and visible from the sports hall.

Each pupil group will have a Student Team Leader from Perth College UHI to guide your pupils around and support them with the activities including a warm-up at the start.

Snacks and water breaks
If your pupils need to eat at a set time e.g. to eat along with medication, that is absolutely fine – just let your group volunteer know. We also understand some pupils may need time out on occasion too. There will be a quiet room available.

Photographs
We do intend to take photographs for promotional purposes and to raise awareness of disability sport opportunities. If there are pupils who do not have permission for photographs to be taken, then please advise us on arrival.

National Sportshall Athletics Championships
10 pupils from this event will be selected and invited to attend the national event on 3rd March in Grangemouth – this will be a mixture of learning, physical and sensory disabilities as per Scottish Disability Sport/Scottish Athletics guidelines. We will be in touch as soon as possible after the event to advise you if one of your pupils has been identified to attend.

And finally, we hope everyone has lots of fun and enjoys all the support and encouragement to and from each other.
